Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) is a Habitat for Humanity International program that improves neighborhoods, increases property values and creates safe and secure neighborhoods. NRI’s function is to repair homes in blighted neighborhoods for low income families. NRI projects can include: facade improvements, safety issues, and weatherization efforts. The key to the program’s success is that the
homeowners will be required to help facilitate and complete the repairs to their home. Homeowners will provide a predetermined amount of sweat equity allowing for a “hand up” and not a “hand out” and keeping within Habitat’s mission.
In 2010, Habitat for Humanity International officially launched its Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI), an effort focused on serving more non-Habitat families & improving challenged and blighted communities. Program offerings of NRI include home facade improvements, weatherization & critical home repairs, that address safety, security and code violations.
The project is funded in part by the United Way of York County, York County Community Foundation and the City of York.
Our NRI program began on the 600 block of W. Princess St. where we completed facade repairs on 11 homes. Repairs that included: replacing rotten and deteriorating porches, decking and railings are replaced with new material, rusted and broken gutters and downspouts are replaced with new products, missing and broken shingles on mansard roofs are replaced or redone and the entire facade including brick and trim is repainted. Existing mailboxes and porch lights are also replaced providing well lit areas and security of personal mail.
Our focus is now on the 300 block of E. Poplar St. where we have successfully begun a neighborhood watch program.
We are currently installing house number on each home so that the police, fire and EMS personnel can quickly and accurately locate the home in an emergency. The spring of 2015 we will begin facade repairs to homeowner occupied homes within the block.
